Each of these cat mange types has their own particularities. The most common among cats are ear mites and notoedric mange. These types are the ones that will be determined by microscopic examination by the veterinarian. For example, the demodectic mange is known as a result of cigar shaped mites. On the other hand if they have a round shape, we would be talking about notoedric cat mange.

How to Treat Cat Mange?

In most cases, the veterinarian will apply Ivermectin on the cat’s skin to treat cat mange problems, this is administered via injection. It will also be recommended that you prevent future problems by choosing products that contain an active ingredient called selamectin.

Since cat mange produces itching, the doctor also will tell you to apply cortisone for relief, along with antibiotic to treat any type of sores.

Remember that you should use cat products, do not use shampoos for dogs or for humans if you haven’t consulted the veterinarian first! Doing this can prove to be very dangerous to your cat’s health.

If your cat suffered a case of notoedric cat mange, keep in mind that it is very contagious, so if you have other cats or pets in the house, they should ALL be treated to get rid of the problem completely.

We have yet to see our Vet, but 8-yr. old female, black, part Persian,
first lost fur on inside of back legs and had thinning tail. Now it
is around her tail and proceeding forward. With three other cats, how
can we prevent them getting it? She pretty much stays to herself, but
has recently become fond of being outdoors, laying on mulch, plants,
concrete, etc. We love them all;thanks for your advice.

I am here to tell you that it is treatable. I went to our local feed store and purchased mange mite cream, you rub it on the infected areas. I also know a vet. he said to rub the area with warm water and a cloth then apply the medicine you have. The mites can spread so it is probably better to be kept form the group until cured. I hope this helps.
