December 20th, 2009

When we talk about fungus infections in cats, we are basically talking about fungus in the skin of the cat and deep infections, examples include ringworm and histoplasmosis. The time I takes to fully eliminate the infection and get rid the cat of fungus will depend on the type of infection, the treatment received, and the severity of the fungal infection.

As you can see, it would be easy to just throw a number here, but there are many factors that come into play. Know though, that some infections can take very months to fully subside, and treatment must be followed religiously, as every day skipped is a day we give the chance for the infection to spread and thrive again.

What Are Antioxidants For Cats and Why Does Your Cat Need Them?

December 12th, 2009
Antioxidants for cats are known for their ability to increase the disease resistance capacity of cells, strengthen the liver, get rid of the toxins, and support normal cellular growth. In this article, I am going to tell you about three herbs which contain highly potent antioxidants which are extremely beneficial for your cat’s health.Huang Qi, mistletoe, and milk thistle are the three herbs I am going to tell you about. In holistic pet care, a wide number of herbs are used. These three herbs, in particular, play a very important role. They are used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine and ayurvedic medicine and are considered the best cat antioxidants by many.

There are three important reasons why these herbs can be good for your cat’s health.

  1. They get rid of the toxins in your cat’s body and cleanse its system thoroughly. Toxin buildup is one of the main reasons why domesticated cats often become ill. These herbs, by eliminating the toxins in your cat’s body, prevent a number of health problems.
  2. These herbs contain powerful cat antioxidants which neutralize the free radicals in your cat’s body. These free radicals, when left unchecked, can do a lot of damage and affect your cat’s health badly. By killing the free radicals, these herbs make your cat healthy.
  3. Antioxidants for cats, like I already mentioned above, are known for their ability to boost the immune system. A regular dose of these antioxidants can support the functioning of your cat’s immune system and make it stronger naturally. So, your cat will be able to stay away from a number of diseases that commonly affect domesticated cats.

Now, if you are thinking about buying these herbs from the local herbalist, making a concoction, and giving it to your cat, I need to tell you something. There are two reasons why you may want to purchase these types of a products from a reputable company instead.

One – you can never be sure of the purity and efficacy of the herbs you buy from some unknown herbalist.

Two – it is next to impossible to make your cat eat the concoction that you prepare. So, you need to look for herbal supplements that contain the right amount of cat antioxidants.

There are a wide range of herbal supplements available for pet today. Some of them are of good quality, some of them are of average quality, and some of them are of very low quality. So, you need to be a little careful while choosing antioxidants for cats. Always go for products that contain 100% natural ingredients as opposed to products that contain a mixture of natural ingredients and synthetic chemicals, preservatives, and additives. Also, make sure the product you choose is approved by the FDA. Most importantly, make sure you buy it directly from the manufacturer or from a very reliable retailer.

You now know just how effective these cat antioxidants are and how beneficial they are for your cat’s health. What you need to do now is very simple. Buy a high quality herbal supplement and make it a part of your cat’s regular diet. It is, without a doubt, the simplest way to make your cat healthy naturally.

Ask you veterinarian to track your cats progress. When providing anything new to your cat be sure to observe their behavior and bodily functions to ensure that they can be tolerated. Natural supplements have a history of safety, but better to be cautious.

How to Deal With Cat Stomach Pain

December 4th, 2009

Dealing with cat stomach pain might prove to be somewhat tricky. The first “obstacle” is determining if your cat is indeed feeling stomach ache. You can look for related symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation and vomiting. Let’s take a look at these cases that can cause pain:

Diarrhea can be caused by many things, including diet changes, infections and even stress. When talking to your vet about this problem you should also recall what food has your cat eaten in the last few days.

Constipation, just like in us humans, can cause acute stomach pain in cats. To avoid cat constipation problems, a good idea is to always give your cat plenty of water and fiber in the diet.

Hairballs are also a quite common problem in cats that can cause stomach ache as they build up in the stomach. Hairball problems will also cause vomiting. There are products in the market that can minimize greatly the appearance of such hair balls.

Other conditions and problems that can bring cat stomach pain are:

  • Bloating
  • Arsenic Poisoning
  • Lead Poisoning
  • Salmonella
  • Feline Panleukopenia
  • Ascites

As you can see, stomach pain can be the symptoms of more serious conditions. In the common cases of diarrhea, constipations and hairballs, prevention is key on dealing with cat stomach pain. In the rest of cases and conditions listed. The best way to deal with the pain must be directed by the vet, who will take into account the underlying problem.

How to Force Feed a Cat

December 3rd, 2009

When it comes to taking care of our cat, sometimes we have to do “unpleasant” things, such as force feeding our cats. In this article you’ll learn how to force feed a cat. Remember that if there is any problem of this kind, the first step is to take your cat to the vet for proper examination quickly.

Many times the vet will tell you to force feed the cat with plenty of food and water in situations where the life of your pet is at stake. The method to do this sometimes remains elusive for the common cat owner, let’s see how it is done:

The first step is to buy the tool you’ll use: a syringe. Don’t worry, you are not going to inject anything to your cat. We won’t use the needle, just the plastic part.

Once you have the syringe, grab wet cat food and add water to it (mix it on a container or bowl), until it reaches a semi-liquid state. Your goal is to let the food pass through the syringe.

Now it is time to interact with your cat. Make sure you don’t look suspicious and menacing as your cat can catch that. Force feeding is unpleasant for cats also. Do not make any associations by calling your cat or announcing what you are about to do.

Grab your cat so the back is resting against you, and put the syringe in the corner of the cat’s mouth, facing a little upwards. Now push the food with the syringe, but don’t do it fast. Now at this point you may notice that everything is becoming a big mess, but that is normal as the cat fights with the force feeding.

Finally, praise your cat and give positive reinforcement for feeding.

Although many of the food will be all over the floor, you can at least rest assured your cat ate at something! Mess is to be expected in these cases, and well that’s something we must learn to deal with when it comes to the health of our cats.

Feline Health Insurance

December 3rd, 2009

Did you know that you can get feline health insurance? Yes! Cat insurance plans work similarly to what normal “people insurance” works! Although it is true that health insurance is not a necessity in the vast majority of cases, many people prefer to get it because this will make them feel safe about the health of the cat, and they know they will be protected if anything happens to their pets.

Cats, like all living beings, are exposed to different risks and diseases in the course of their lives. Even if you take all the measures to assure perfect health for your cat, you can still get an unpleasant surprise in time. There are many things that your cat can run into when you are not watching every move, like chocolate poisoning, plant poisoning and accidents.

With a feline health insurance plan, you’ll be feeling confident that even if your cat has a health problem, you won’t be short on money at that time to help your animal friend. You’ll see that there is no right or wrong when it comes to insurance; you’ll have to think about all the pros and cons you see from your unique perspective, and act upon them. Many people just opt for insurance just to “feel safe” and that’s perfectly normal.

If you opt to acquire cat health insurance, take your time to review the different plans and insurance companies. There are different types of info you should look for such as the prices, coverage in the policies, deductible and co-insurance prices, etc.

Take your time, don’t rush and focus on what is important with feline health insurance plans: the health of your cat.
